Fall Back Into Networking: A Simple Way to Make It Less Scary

For many small business owners, networking is one of those “I know I should” activities that often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. And let’s be honest—sometimes it’s not just about being busy. It’s about fear.

Fear of putting yourself out there. Fear of not knowing what to say. Fear of walking into a room where it feels like everyone already knows each other.

The good news? Networking doesn’t have to be overwhelming, and you don’t need to go to every event on the calendar to make it work for your business. In fact, a little planning can make the whole process more purposeful—and even enjoyable.

Know Your Goals Before You Go

Before signing up for another chamber breakfast or business mixer, pause and ask yourself: What do I actually want to get out of this?

  • Are you hoping to meet potential clients?

  • Looking for referral partners?

  • Wanting to connect with other local business owners who understand your challenges?

When you’re clear on your goals, you’ll know which events are worth your time—and you’ll feel more confident walking into the room because you’re not just “showing up.” You’re there with a purpose.

A 20-Minute Networking Task You Can Do This Week

If the thought of big events still feels intimidating, start smaller. Take 20 minutes this week to refresh your networking list.

  1. Write down 5 people you’d like to reconnect with—past clients, collaborators, or other business owners you admire.

  2. Pick 1–2 and send a simple note:

    • “Thinking of you—how’s fall shaping up for you?”

    • “Would love to catch up over coffee this month.”

    • Or share a resource you think they’d find helpful.

  3. Bonus: Check your local chamber or community group to see if there’s a fall event that aligns with your goals.

Small, intentional steps like this build your confidence, strengthen your relationships, and keep your business visible in your community.

Because at the end of the day, networking isn’t about walking into a crowded room—it’s about building meaningful connections, one conversation at a time.
